Workshop
Safety
Guidelines

Last updated 6th May 2025

Care – for yourself and for those around you – is a good thing.

Whilst workshops are for you to enjoy, they are my work. The Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 requires everyone to take reasonable care for the health and safety of themselves, and of other people who might be affected by their actions.

Drawing, life drawing and portrait workshops may involve the following activities

  • Using art materials:-

    • That may stain clothes or skin

    • That may create dust and particulate matter that can be inhaled or irritate eyes

    • That may cause minor injuries like cuts

    • That may aggravate existing skin or health conditions

    • That may contain substances that can damage your health

  • Using easels, which may be unstable or a trip hazard

  • Using sharp tools like craft knives

  • Standing whilst drawing

As I am responsible for caring for your safety, I have completed a risk assessment, and consider everyone’s safety and well-being as I plan workshops. I will explain how to use materials and equipment, and inform you of any specific risks in each session. I will have a first aid kit and PPE available.

When in a workshop, it is your responsibility to

  • Follow the class code of conduct

  • Wear appropriate clothing and footwear

  • Not eat and drink in the working area, other than bottled water

  • Not be under the influence of drugs or alcohol

  • Use tools, equipment and materials safely and according to instructions

  • Keep your belongings and materials tidy; don’t leave bags or equipment on the floor where they may trip other people

  • Clean up any spillages immediately, with appropriate cleaning materials

  • Do not use fixative, hairspray or aerosols indoors

  • Be aware of risk from materials or any hazardous substances; use, store and dispose of them properly, and make sure the room is adequately ventilated

  • Wear any PPE if advised (e.g. masks, gloves, eye protection)

  • Use electrical equipment safely, and make sure cables do not trail across the floor.

  • Move and handle equipment and furniture carefully; take care of your back.

  • Store easels and furniture carefully - do not over-stack chairs.

  • In the case of fire, leave the room immediately and do not stop to collect your belongings.

  • Report any accidents, broken equipment or hazards to me immediately

If I consider that you are not following safety instructions, endangering yourself or others, or that your behaviour breaks our code of conduct, you will be asked to leave the workshop (at my sole discretion) and no refund will be given.

When you sign up for a workshop, I will ask you to indicate that you understand these guidelines, and your responsibility for your own safety, and ask you to disclose any health information that might affect your participation.

I will keep a record of your information in confidence, following GDPR rules. For more about how I protect your data, see the privacy notice.
