Life Drawing at Tyler Hill - 23rd May

  • Tyler Hill Memorial Hall Summer Lane Canterbury, England, CT2 9NJ United Kingdom (map)

A two hour tutored life drawing session in a spacious hall in Tyler Hill, just outside Canterbury.

Come along and make expressive drawings from the human figure. Work from female and male unclothed models in order to help you build your fundamental drawing and observation skills and your understanding of the basics of human anatomy.

The class runs from 11:30am-13:30pm - you can arrive from 11:15 to get set up.

  • There’s a good sized car park outside the hall, and it’s walking distance from the University of Kent campus (if you don’t mind a bit of a hill).

Nearest bus stop is Tyler’s Kiln, Tyler Hill, on route 5 (which runs between Seasalter and Canterbury Bus Station.)

  • The class is tutored, and each class starts with some exercises to help you try different techniques and develop your drawing skills. We’ll have a variety of pose lengths, from a couple of minutes to half an hour, and use a variety of approaches, materials and techniques to help you develop a more personal response in your work.

I aim to give everyone individual feedback on their work in each class, and we take time to look at everyone’s drawings together - it’s a great way to learn from each other!

Blocks of classes build on a theme or technique, but I’ll recap anything you need to know each class.

If you’re a more experienced artist, you’re free to do your own thing, with crits and feedback from me and the wider class.

  • Beginners are welcome - you don’t need any previous drawing experience to come along to this class. It’s a great, safe place to try drawing and painting the figure in a supportive, inclusive and non-judgemental atmosphere. It’s based on the belief that drawing is a process, that everyone can draw, and there’s no such thing as a bad drawing: gentle curiosity and a joyful willingness to do things badly are encouraged.

If you’re nervous or unsure, drop me a line for a chat.

  • Bring some basic drawing materials: Pencil (4b or softer), eraser, sharpener, willow charcoal, any other materials you enjoy working with (but not solvent based oil paint).

There will be a few easels available (first come first served) plus drawing boards - hopefully enough for everyone!

You’re welcome to bring your own easel and board, or work in sketchbooks.

A2 paper will be available to buy in the class at cost - currently 25p/sheet.

There will be some spare materials if you forget stuff, or if material cost is a barrier to you.

If you’re using paint or wet media, you’ll need to protect the floor beneath your easel.

Please don’t use solvent based paint or spray fixatives or aerosols in the hall.

  • I try to be inclusive in the way I run classes, but I'm always learning. If there's anything that might be a barrier to you fully taking part in the course, please feel free to drop me an email, or pull me aside for a chat at the start of the class. Perhaps you find it hard to hear in a loud room, find standing for more than a few minutes tiring, or just feel a bit nervous - it's OK! I'm really happy to work together to adapt things to work for all of us in the class.

If you’re under 18, you’ll need to show you have an OK from a parent or guardian, because life classes involve naked models.

  • You need to be 14 or older to join the class.

If you’re under 18, you’ll need to show you have an OK from a responsible adult (parent or guardian), because life classes involve naked models and people can be weird about that stuff. I want to make sure you’re safe, and properly looked after.

Drop me an email and we can sort it out.

The small print

Tickets are non-refundable, as I need to pay our model and cover venue costs. However, it’s fine to transfer tickets between people if you let me know in advance who wants to take your slot.

There is a code of conduct and you’ll need to agree to the workshop safety guidelines.

If you behave in a way that endangers yourself or others, are disrespectful of the model or other attendees, you will be asked to leave and no refund will be given.
